It's finally time to release on Steam!

We are proud to announce that 'Darkout Stage 1' will be released on Steam the 4th of December. Those keeping up with the press and our social pages probably know that part already, but here are some more details below.

    What is stage 1?

Thanks to everyone’s feedback and a year of Beta the game is finally in a place which we can consider the base version of Darkout, Stage 1.

From this point on we will expand on the universe, Biomes, Gameplay, Items, etc.

We currently have 3 more Key stages planned and will reveal all the details of these plans as we develop the game further, not unlike our predecessors in the Sandbox genre.

In-between the stages we will also have some mini updates as needed :)

    Stage 2 – 4 will contain
    • More Story
      o
Why are you here and what is really going on? All this will be revealed as Each stage contains a new act for the storyline
    • More Biomes
      o
Underwater Biome, Sky Base, Feral Jungle, etc
    • An End Game
      o
Fix the Ship or Illuna? Only time will tell
    • More enemies
      o
      The Penguin Drones
      o
      More bosses with each Stage
    • Survivors
      o
      Dead, alive, evil, good?
    • Underground Bunkers / Labs
      o
      Unique treasures, enemies, stories
    • Vehicles
      o
      Sub, Mech, and?
      o
      Weapons, Devices, rewards, achievements, etc!
    • Multiplayer
      o
      Alpha/Beta in Stage 2
      o
Beta to Completion in Stage 3
Since our last Open Beta update we have implemented quite a host of new features including
    • The Big Boss!
      o Includes some new music!
    • Backwards movement while firing weapons
    • Elevators
    • Completely new story line (ACT-1) for the game, which can be followed at your own leisure, as an extra feature for those who like to immerse themselves in the world of Darkout even more.
    • Voice-overs for the story!
    • By popular community request we have added a completely new playable Male character to the game as well as various different start-up color choices for both characters. These will come into play even more in future when we delve into the different casts and positions of service in the old world of Illuna that came before the age of Darkout
    • And a brand new Intro movie!
    • Achievements! We track everything!
      o
How many trees did you cut down, iron did you find, enemies did you kill, etc :)
We have also taken all the Preview and player feedback from the last patch and done a complete polish/refinement pass on our interface and overall gameplay experience. This also includes…
    • Tweaking the light penetration into the ground for easier mining and exploration on the surface and City. Below ground portable lights are your only salvation.
    • Click and Hold mining and block placement
    • Device placement directly from the inventory
    • Removal of the Shift key when interacting with devices (doors, trapdoors, etc.)
    • Gamma setting! (we know it’s dark)
    • Overhauled UI
    • New AI for ALL enemies
    • Tweaked Light Dark Mechanic for enemies
    • Completely new Item Database system for improved performance with crafting, storage and containers.
We'll keep you updated on all the developments and want to thank everyone for helping us get here! :)

If we paid for beta access to the game, do we get the Steam version for free?

As far as I know, yes.
If you did not purchase it through Desura you will have to email a proof of purchase (like your confirmation email from amazon, etc.), or your purchase number or something to that effect.

On Desura the keys will be sent automatically to your account. This will also happen on Gamefly, Green Man Gaming, and possibly Amazon.

Is it sad that I've posted in this thread and just noticed the video?

    Damn tryptophen hangover!
    Insanely great video guys.

Logged in because I got an email saying the game was being launched. I can't help but notice the omission of the promised multiplayer....yet again. To make matters worse, this is the first announcement of the "delay"--5 days before the launch. I was criticized in my thread a while back by fanbois (despite their claims of being otherwise) for being skeptical of the empty promises being made about this game. Looks like the joke is on them, or rather, all of us who supported this game at some point.

I also love how this "announcement" regarding multiplayer is ninja'd into the patch notes. Really shows the integrity of the dev team.

Hold on there hoss, you must be tired from all the conclusion jumping your doing right now.

    • Firstly these sure as heck are not patch notes just a quick list of features and upcoming features.
    • Until I actually see the game I'm not going to jump to conclusions or impugn anyone's integrity like you've done in just two post.
    • I sure did not see them say they are delaying anything, I read something about Alpha/Beta in stage two. That could mean anything including that the alpha is in this stage and it will transition to beta in the next.
    • Even if you are correct in your assumptions, an attitude and aspersions on the integrity and abilities of the development team is definitely not the way to go.
    • Why not just, you know, ask them straight up about multiplier since they have been responding to questions and comments in this thread all day long?
And yes quiet a few members of the community will be upset about multi-player not being out when the game launches on Steam in a few days, but I think the development team may be forgiven since they were trying to make the overall experience acceptable for a Steam launch. No one wants a debacle at the Steam launch, the last thing they need is people complaining about chest eating their items and crashes every times someone jumps. If the game comes out too buggy, it will reduce sales and that would make it less likely that multi-player will ever get in, IF it s not in this current version already.

Because personally, I'd rather have overall polish, usability, and content any day of the week over a buggy game with multi-player.

Its not about what you would like personally though. Its actually more about saying that you will deliver on something, and then actually delivering on it. And whether they are patch notes or not is not the issue here. What is the issue is that the already delayed (multiple times) multiplayer is delayed again. The other issue is that instead of like a month back coming out and saying "Hey guys, looks like we wont be able to get multiplayer into this 'stage 1' thing" its snuck into a "feature list" 5 days before launch as if in hopes that no one will notice. This is the third time the game has "launched" if I am not mistaken, and it looks like another tactic to drum up sales and little else. I understand that development takes time, however, everything about this game was premature. If this was the first time they were accepting a dime for it then yes they would be "forgiven", but this is not the case. So no, I don't think I am jumping to conclusions. Does the white-knighting ever have you feeling fatigued?

Uhm... I'm a white knight? My father will be surprised...and so will the rest of my family.... At least my sister will be happy, she wont be the only one anymore... she's a half-white knight, I'm the half-black samurai.

I'm just tired of people jumping to conclusions about things without even knowing the full details. I get that ALL the time. It is extremely upsettings. So I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt until I have more information.

Now excuse me, I have damsels to save and ronin to hunt down.

Be happy you can play at all. I still get video card issues whenever I even try to open the game...issues that I have to reboot the computer to fix.

But yeah, I bought an access key back when the game was still an Indiegogo thing. Do I need to forward my contribution e-mail? And if so, what address do I need to forward it to? What other information do I need to include? (Sorry for the double-post, the time limit expired before I could edit my previous post.)

For most people, as the developer stated in the above quote, it will go to you automatically, so don't worry. I think Amazon customers such as myself may possibly need to send something to the developers.

I am sure when and if that time comes that they will provide us with the data for what information we need to send them. Until then I would not be to worried about it.

    Hey Everyone,

Anyone interested to actually know why MP is not in this version can go read the post we made today. We intentionally did not want to turn this thread into a whole MP one because it is about the steam launch and the plans etc.

Those who say the game has launched so many times etc may want to remember that we have been in beta this whole year and that we are now finally launching 'On Steam' which is the largest platform in the world, and what we have been trying to achieve all year when we were still going through the whole greenlight process.

We appreciate all the support we have had from everyone so far because without you we would not have been able to make the game what it is today.

Needless to say we are positive that the enhancements and polishing we have done in the last 3 months on the SP version was more important because without a good core experience MP would not really matter.

Ah good old Darkout Administrator. May want to check the age of my account before making claims that the game has "been in Beta all year". I was around for the FIRST launch when you guys were satisfied enough to call it official and the LATER redacted it and called it beta. Again, a bit shady.

Nice. Going up against Starbound Beta the same day though. Was that the plan?

Since nobody has said directly, if we bought it on Indiegogo for the original kickstarter will you just send us our Steam keys by e-mail?

Steam keys will be sent via e-mail to everyone who supported us on Indiegogo :)

As for Starbound, lots of games releasing in December, bound to end up on the same day as someone :)
